“Genius is the operative word
here.” — Time Out
“One of the most dramatic voices in contemporary music.” — The
Guardian
One of Eire’s finest singers, Iarla Ó Lionáird is best-known as the
ethereal Gaelic voice of Afro Celt
Sound System. But like all members of that groundbreaking
collective, there is another side to him; his voice and his vision
spring from Ireland’s sean nós — one of the oldest and purest
of the world’s singing traditions — and from this bedrock he takes the
leaps of imagination that form this extraordinary solo effort.
Carrying echoes of the ancients, Ó Lionáird blends his complete sense
of place and culture with the modern sounds and instrumentation of
such other great sonic explorers as Sigur Ros or Royksopp. Featuring
10th century Gaelic storytelling alongside the poems of Sian Ó Riada
and a guest appearance from Gavin Bryars and his Viola Septet, this is
truly an album that uses the roots of tradition to forge a path to the
future.
