SPIRIT OF AFRICA is an initiative from the Mercury Phoenix Trust and Real World Records to raise awareness in the fight against AIDS. It is a musical and visual invitation, not to lament, but to celebrate the tenacity, hope, and courage of so many who cope daily against soul-destroying odds. It celebrates the indomitable true spirit of Africa, even under siege. The Mercury Phoenix Trust was established by the surviving members of Queen and their manager in memory of Freddy Mercury, and since 1992, has donated millions to the fight against AIDS worldwide. Their African charities in particular including supporting the TASO Choir, all of whose members are affected by HIV/AIDS. For this album, musicians from 11 African nations contributed songs expressing resilience and optimism in the face of their continent's devastating health crisis, where AIDS will claim the lives of fully one-third of today's 15-year-olds. |
